油画系的前身为国立艺术院西画系,创立于1928年,1954年正式更名为油画系,是中国现代意义上最早设立的高等油画教育机构。在近百年的发展历程中,中国美院油画系始终走在时代的前列,它不仅是中国现代艺术教育形成和发展的标志,也在一定程度上代表了中国高等艺术教育的最高水平。中国美术学院作为国内“双一流”建设高校,油画是具有重要支撑意义的核心专业之一。
Oil Painting Department
The predecessor of the Oil Painting Department was the Western Painting Department of the National Academy of Art, founded in 1928. It was officially renamed the Oil Painting Department in 1954, making it the earliest institution of higher education in oil painting in the modern sense in China. Throughout its nearly century-long history, the Oil Painting Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA) has consistently been at the forefront of its time. It is not only a hallmark of the formation and development of modern art education in China but also represents the highest level of advanced art education in the country. As a "Double First-Class" university in China, CAA regards oil painting as one of its core disciplines with crucial supportive significance.
创院之初,林风眠院长和吴大羽主任等一代中国早期油画艺术教育宗师,从艺术史和艺术风格等具体问题入手,“从寻求艺术之原始”和“寻求艺术构成之根本方法”来剖析、体察中西艺术,鲜明地提出了“介绍西方艺术、整理中国艺术、调合中西艺术、创造时代艺术”的口号与学术主张,并由此形成兼融并蓄的学术传统和教育理念。在近百年的教育实践中,油画系产生了林风眠、吴大羽、关良、倪贻德、颜文樑、赵无极、朱德群、董希文、罗工柳、莫朴、黎冰鸿、苏天赐、吴冠中等一大批蜚声中外的著名艺术家及教育家,为中国美术的发展事业做出了巨大贡献。
At its inception, founding figures and early masters of Chinese oil painting education such as Director Lin Fengmian and Head of the Department Wu Dayu engaged with specific issues of art history and style. They analyzed and contemplated Chinese and Western art by "seeking the origins of art" and "seeking the fundamental methods of artistic construction," clearly proposing the slogan and academic principle: "Introduce Western art, systematize Chinese art, reconcile Chinese and Western art, and create art of our time." This formed an inclusive academic tradition and educational philosophy. Over nearly a hundred years of educational practice, the department has produced a large number of renowned artists and educators famous both in China and abroad, including Lin Fengmian, Wu Dayu, Guan Liang, Ni Yide, Yan Wenliang, Zao Wou-Ki (Zhao Wuji), Chu Teh-Chun (Zhu Dequn), Dong Xiwen, Luo Gongliu, Mo Pu, Li Binghong, Su Tianci, and Wu Guanzhong, who have made tremendous contributions to the development of Chinese art.
新中国成立后,油画系遵照党的文艺路线和教育方针,强调理论和实践相结合的教育方法,提出“现实主义的、中国民族的、中国革命的美术教育”,建立了具有“浙美”油画系特点的艺理并重、多元并举的教学体系,成为新中国油画艺术教育和创作的重要研究基地。这其中,肖峰、全山石等新中国第一代留苏艺术家为油画系的专业教学注入了新的活力,极大提升了油画系的办学水平,可谓功不可没。1960年,罗马尼亚油画家埃乌琴·博巴应中国文化部邀请到我校举办为期两年的油画训练班,史称“罗训班”,它和中央美术学院的“马克西莫夫油画训练班”一道,为新中国的油画教育做出了影响深远、不可磨灭的重要贡献。
After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the Oil Painting Department adhered to the Party's guidelines on literature, art, and education, emphasizing an educational method that integrated theory and practice. It advocated for "a realist, Chinese national, and Chinese revolutionary art education," establishing a teaching system characteristic of the "Zhemei" (Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts, precursor to CAA) Oil Painting Department that valued artistic skill, theory, and pluralism. It became an important research center for oil painting education and creation in New China. Among these efforts, the first generation of artists who studied in the Soviet Union, such as Xiao Feng and Quan Shanshi, brought new vitality to the department's professional teaching, which are invaluable contributions in enhancing the educational quality. In 1960, at the invitation of the Chinese Ministry of Culture, the Romanian oil painter Eugen Popa came to CAA to hold a two-year oil painting training program, historically known as the "Romanian Training Class". Together with the "Maksimov Oil Painting Training Class" at the Central Academy of Fine Arts, it made profound and indelible contributions to oil painting education in New China.
改革开放以来,中国当代绘画艺术在理论和实践上都得到了重大突破,油画系在强调基础教学的同时,以“两端深入”的姿态,既重视对西方油画艺术传统的回溯与研究,也重视对现代艺术观念的探索和思考。强调绘画视觉活动的过程性研究,以对中国文化精神和当代艺术精神的研究为双翼,执守以写生为基本点的基础教学形式,继承中西融合的思想线索,建立了整体展开、层层叠进的教学方法论体系。1985年,赵无极重返母校举办为期一个月的“赵无极训练班”,油画系部分师生在赵无极的直接教学指导下,重新思考自我及当下艺术创作。同年,以油画系85届毕业创作所引发的“85运动”,书写了改革初期中国艺术运动的新篇章;10年后的1995年,油画系将“具象表现绘画”作为试点引入教学改革实践,在国内引起强烈反响,成为中国美术学院办学历史上又一次思想解放的重要标志,其影响至今不衰。
Since the Reform and Opening-Up, Chinese contemporary painting has achieved major breakthroughs in both theory and practice. While emphasizing foundational teaching, the Oil Painting Department adopted a stance of "in-depth exploration at both ends", valuing both the retrospective study of the Western oil painting tradition and the exploration and consideration of modern artistic concepts. It stresses the procedural research of visual activities in painting, using the study of Chinese cultural spirit and contemporary art spirit as dual wings. Adhering to foundational teaching forms based on sketching, inheriting the thread of thought integrating Chinese and Western art, it established a comprehensive, layered, and progressive teaching methodology system. In 1985, Zao Wou-Ki (Zhao Wuji) returned to his alma mater to conduct a one-month "Zao Wou-Ki Workshop", where faculty and students under his direct guidance reconsidered themselves and contemporary art creation. That same year, the graduation creations of the class of 1985 sparked the "'85 Movement", writing a new chapter in the Chinese art movement of the early reform period. A decade later, in 1995, the department introduced "Figurative Expression Painting" into its teaching reform practice and generated a strong response in China, which has become another major mark of ideological liberation in CAA's history and influences till now.
2004年11月,在许江院长的盛情邀请下,83岁高龄的赵无极先生再次返回母校并在油画系进行现场教学示范。凝神观视中,时光仿若回到往昔,赵无极浑然忘我的绘画状态、无拘无束的尽情挥洒,细致严谨的观物方式,又重现了当年“赵无极短训班”时的教学风采。
2015年,根据学校院系调整的统一部署,原油画系、版画系、壁画系、综合绘画系共同组成中国美术学院绘画艺术学院。目前,绘画艺术学院油画系实行“两段式”教学机制,一年级学生在造型基础部进行宽口径、厚基础的培养,二年级至四年级在专业系课中进行工作室制教学。油画系根据中国油画艺术创作的发展状况与学院的历史传承脉络,设立了四个工作室,分别为历史与主题性绘画工作室、新具象绘画工作室、具象表现绘画工作室、多维表现绘画工作室。工作室教学涉及多元艺术教育体系的建立与实践,以开启学生的艺术个性,培养较高素质创造型人才为根本目的。
In November 2004, with the warm invitation of President Xu Jiang, the 83-year-old Mr. Zao Wou-Ki (Zhao Wuji) returned once again to his alma mater and held a live teaching demonstration in the Oil Painting Department. In those moments of intense observation, time seemed to turn back, as Zao Wou-Ki's self-forgetful painting state, unrestrained expression, and meticulous way of viewing objects recreated the teaching style of the earlier "Zao Wou-Ki Short Workshop."
In 2015, according to the university's unified deployment for departmental adjustments, the former Oil Painting Department, Printmaking Department, Mural Painting Department, and Comprehensive Painting Department were merged to form the School of Painting at the CAA. For now, the Oil Painting Department within the School of Painting implements a "two-stage" teaching mechanism: first-year students receive broad-based and solid foundational training in the Foundation Department, while students from second to fourth year undergo studio-based teaching within the professional department. Based on the development status of Chinese oil painting creation and the academy's historical lineage, the Oil Painting Department has established four studios: the History and Theme Painting Studio, the New Figurative Painting Studio, the Figurative Expression Painting Studio, and the Multi-Dimensional Expression Painting Studio. Studio teaching involves the establishment and practice of a pluralistic art education system, aiming to inspire students' artistic individuality and cultivate high-quality creative talents.
在全国高校第四轮学科水平评估中,包括油画专业在内的中国美术学院“美术学”学科被评为“A+”等级,入选“世界一流学科建设学科”。2021年,打通连贯油画系四个工作室教学的“色彩——油画写生语言”,先后获评教育部“国家级一流本科课程”及“国家级课程思政示范课程”。
经过多年的建设,油画系除招收本科及硕士研究生外,目前还招收“具象表现绘画”及“具象写实绘画”两个方向博士研究生。
油画系历任系主任有吴大羽、黎冰鸿、王德威、全山石、郑胜天、胡振宇、许江、章仁缘、杨参军、何红舟、封治国等著名艺术家。

In the fourth round of China's national disciplinary assessment, CAA's "Fine Arts" discipline, which includes oil painting, was rated "A+," and it was selected as a "World-Class Discipline Construction" subject. In 2021, the course "Color – The Language of Oil Painting Sketch", which integrates teaching across all four studios of the Oil Painting Department, was successively awarded the Ministry of Education's "National First-Class Undergraduate Course" and "National Model Course for Ideological and Political Education."
After years of development, besides enrolling undergraduate and Master's students, the Oil Painting Department now also admits Ph.D. students in two directions: "Figurative Expressionist Painting" and "Figurative Realist Painting."
Past heads of the Oil Painting Department include renowned artists such as Wu Dayu, Li Binghong, Wang Dewei, Quan Shanshi, Zheng Shengtian, Hu Zhenyu, Xu Jiang, Zhang Renyuan, Yang Canjun, He Hongzhou, and Feng Zhiguo.

The School of Painting at the China Academy of Art adheres to the socialist educational orientation with Chinese characteristics, guided by the fundamental principle of "Fostering Virtue through Education". Its disciplinary development is anchored in the framework of "Oriental Studies in Visual Art", with the overarching objective of cultivating well-rounded talents—individuals who excel in both scholarship and virtue, integrate artistic practice with theory, possess a deep understanding of past and present, and build bridges between China and the world. The School continuously expands its international profile, dedicating itself to training high-level, specialized painting talents for the future and contributing to the revitalization of the Chinese nation's artistic endeavors.
The Oil Painting Department focuses on the School's core mission: "Technique and Method – Reflecting Upon and Reconstructing Painting Methodology in the Era of 'Grand Painting'." It continuously refines its studio-based teaching to address the new, multidimensional landscape of contemporary oil painting creation. The Department is building an educational system supported by the triad of "Studio, Laboratory, and Research Institute", emphasizing professional integration and deepening disciplinary substance. Through a teaching framework that balances pluralistic expansion with ontological enhancement, it conducts teaching practices centered on themes such as deepening the realist spirit, integrating the Chinese spirit, and figurative expression. Educational Philosophy
Oil painting, an art form that originated in Europe, has exerted a worldwide influence and continues to evolve. The Oil Painting Department's curriculum is designed to integrate the evolving global tradition of oil painting with the Chinese artistic spirit. It is committed to honing skills in both theoretical research and painting technique, while fostering a fusion of the medium's intrinsic language with the cultivation of artistic individuality. Within the new context of "Grand Painting," contemporary oil painting education must be grounded in traditional depth while achieving intellectual height. Furthermore, the very substance and reach of oil painting pedagogy should be continuously infused with new vitality as times change.
基本框架
(1)油画系实行工作室制教学。一年级学生在造型基础部进行宽口径、厚基础的学习,二年级经融通课后进入相应工作室,采取个人志愿与工作室选拔相结合的方式。
(2)油画系以四个工作室教学为总体格局,各工作室以自己的研究方向,贯彻各工作室的学术思想,根据工作室的教学计划和大纲实施教学,并结合课题建设形成特色课程,体现其教学面貌。

Basic Framework
(1) The Oil Painting Department operates on a studio-based teaching system. In their first year, students build a broad and solid foundation in the Foundation Department. Upon completing these foundational courses, they are assigned to specific studios for their second year, based on a process that considers both student preference and studio selection.
(2) The Department's structure is built around four distinct studios. Each studio, guided by its specific research focus, implements its own academic vision. Teaching is delivered according to studio-specific plans and syllabi, with distinctive courses often developed in conjunction with project work, thereby creating a unique educational profile for each studio.
(3) Collectively, these four studios create a diverse and multifaceted learning environment for artistic development. The core objective of the studio teaching model is to establish a practical methodological framework. This approach aims to unlock each student's artistic individuality and cultivate high-quality, well-rounded talents who are well-versed in both theory and practice, and capable of bridging traditional and contemporary, Eastern and Western art forms.

It focuses on the spiritual portrayal of "human beings" as historical subjects, engaging with intellectual resources and self-awareness within a broad cultural context to manifest a historical sensibility in thematic painting and to advance the tradition and development of narrative expression in oil painting.
Teaching Focus:
The studio's teaching is grounded in learning from and absorbing a wide range of intellectual resources within a humanistic framework. This foundation supports the study and reflection on the language of thematic narrative painting. The program emphasizes inheriting the outstanding realist legacy of thematic painting from both Eastern and Western traditions, researching traditional Western oil painting techniques, and shaping a spiritually rich historical connotation through the integration of national culture with contemporary sentiment.

The studio prioritizes cultivating a traditional approach to painting from life, combining rigorous scholarship with creative passion, and integrating a sense of form with a personalized color language. Guided by the principle of "returning to the things themselves," the studio focuses on the interdependent relationship between humanity and the world. Employing phenomenology as a core methodology, it seeks to reveal the process of visual manifestation. This approach explores new intellectual foundations and creative dynamics between subject and object, experimenting with possibilities for a profound synthesis of Chinese and Western artistic practices.
Teaching Focus:
The studio emphasizes a distinctive "way of seeing", fostering the research and development of personal visual languages. It prioritizes painting from life to transcend preconceived concepts and the interpretation of naturalism. By concentrating on the contextual relationship of "being-in-the-world", it encourages students to actively engage with challenges in their practice, leading to a deeper comprehension of the essence of artistic creation.
